About Avalon Rail
How We Work
We are interested in work with passenger railcars of any size and scope. feel it is important to be able to tend to our clients in any capacity whether they have wreck damage, a full rebuild or an Amtrak inspection to complete. Our timelines depend mostly on work scope and the ability to have design and decisions made in a timely manner. Full rebuild projects have varied widely from 11 weeks to 1 year.
Developing a maintenance plan is something that will never be wasted time. Railcars need regular attention to their mechanical systems, exterior body condition and interior condition. Our bid estimate for work will include exact work scope requested arrived at with you in determining what the desired work scope is. Change orders are introduced only for hidden damage not able to be seen when doing the inspection and bid prior to work starting. We always give our clients choices when additional issues are uncovered so they may direct how the work might progress beyond that original scope.
The type of railcar and project will determine costs. These are the questions we will typically ask to get a feel for what we need to do:
- What type of railcar? (Commuter/Stainless/Heavyweight/Antique)
- Will the car travel on rail? (Commuter Line/Freight Line/Amtrak/VIA)
- What is the intended use for the car? (Commuter/Private/Leasing/Static Display)
- What is the current condition of the car? (Please provide photos)
- What existing mechanical systems does the car have? What would you like to be upgraded?
- What is the current configuration of the interior? What specifically would you like to be upgraded?

Our Faclility
Our 60,000 square foot facility is located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, just 90 miles north of Chicago. Railcars can be brought to our facility via Amtrak, which is switched off the train at Milwaukee's Amtrak depot by Canadian Pacific Railway who exchanges with Union Pacific Railroad which then services Avalon directly.
